Smart Dispatch & Route Optimization Helped a Residential Electrical Company Complete 40% More Service Calls Per Day

By replacing whiteboard scheduling and phone-based coordination with an intelligent dispatch platform, the company unlocked capacity it didn't know it had — completing 40% more service calls per day with the same crew, while delivering a faster and more professional customer experience. Technicians spent less time in transit and more time on job sites, the office team was freed from constant coordination calls, and the business gained the operational infrastructure to continue scaling without adding administrative overhead. The combination of location-aware job assignment, AI-optimized routing, and a mobile-first technician experience fundamentally changed what the company could execute in a single day.

This is an illustrative concept we use to spark conversations with clients. It reflects the kind of thinking and approach we bring to engagements in hvac, electrical & plumbing — not a specific past project or guaranteed outcome.
Overview

A young residential electrical company had grown rapidly in its first three years, building a strong reputation for quality work and fast response times. But as the team expanded from a two-person operation to a multi-crew business, the owner's ability to personally coordinate every job disappeared — and the cracks in their manual dispatching process became impossible to ignore.

Technicians were crisscrossing the same neighborhoods, spending more time in trucks than on job sites. The office was overwhelmed by constant phone calls to coordinate schedules, and the company was turning away work it had the crew to handle — simply because it couldn't assign and route jobs fast enough.

JSG partnered with the company to build an intelligent dispatch and routing system that matched the speed of their growth.

Client: A residential electrical services company

Employee Size: 8–14 employees

Industry: HVAC, Electrical & Plumbing

Services: - Custom Dispatch System Development - AI Automation & Route Optimization - Mobile App Development - Cloud Infrastructure

The Challenge

The company had scaled from the owner running every job personally to managing three crews across a metro area — but its dispatch process hadn't scaled with it.

Job assignments were made each morning based on a whiteboard schedule and the owner's knowledge of who was where. As the day progressed and new calls came in, rescheduling required a chain of phone calls between the office and each crew. Urgent requests — a panel failure, a tripped breaker at a commercial tenant — disrupted the entire day's plan because there was no system to identify the nearest available technician.

Routing was based on gut feel. Technicians frequently drove 30+ minutes between jobs that could have been sequenced to keep them in the same zip code. The company estimated that each crew was losing 60–90 minutes per day to unnecessary drive time.

The office coordinator spent most of her day on the phone managing schedule changes rather than booking new work. During peak demand weeks, the company was declining jobs — not because it lacked capacity, but because it couldn't coordinate what it had.

The owner also had no visibility into real-time field status. He couldn't answer a customer asking "when will the electrician arrive?" without calling the technician directly.

The company needed a system that would: - Assign jobs based on technician location, skill set, and availability - Optimize routes to minimize drive time between jobs - Adapt dynamically to same-day changes and urgent requests - Give technicians job details on their phones without calling the office - Provide real-time visibility into crew status and ETAs

Our Solution

JSG built a custom dispatch and routing platform designed for the realities of a fast-moving residential electrical operation.

Key Components

Location-Aware Job Assignment Jobs were assigned based on technician proximity, skill certification (not every electrician is licensed for every job type), and current workload. The system prioritized keeping crews in tight geographic zones to minimize travel.

AI-Assisted Route Optimization Routes were calculated dynamically, factoring in traffic patterns, job duration estimates, and time windows. When new jobs were added mid-day, the system reoptimized remaining routes automatically.

Technician Mobile App (React Native) Each technician received job assignments, customer details, route directions, and schedule changes directly on their phone. They could update job status, capture photos, and log completion — all without calling the office.

Real-Time Dispatch Dashboard The office coordinator gained a live map view of all crews, job statuses, and ETAs. Customers asking "where's my electrician?" could be answered instantly.

Urgent Request Handling Emergency jobs were automatically routed to the nearest available, qualified technician with a single click, eliminating the phone-tag chain that previously delayed response by 30+ minutes.

TMX Platform Foundation The dispatch system was built on JSG's TMX platform, providing the authentication, role management, and data infrastructure out of the box — allowing JSG to focus development time on the dispatch-specific features rather than rebuilding common infrastructure.

Results
